I recently re-watched one of my favorite TED talks. Its a really easy to understand lecture about making your choices easier, as well as making the choices for your customer easier as well.
This is something I think all small businesses need to consider. I have watched a lot of them bite off more then they can chew with the idea that people like more choices. Well that just isn’t true! This video proves it.
Something that plagues Seattle is the shop that also tries to be a coffee shop. We have donut places, video rentals, groceries, wine shops, dessert bars, fabric shops; all that also sell coffee. Seattle has an obsession with it, but just because coffee is a money maker in this city doesn’t mean you should add it to your inventory. I don’t need a latte when I rent Bridesmaids, I just don’t. I also don’t need it as a choice there.
Think of it this way, what is your brand mission? If your goal is to make amazing desserts then does coffee fit? Maybe it does, maybe it doesn’t. You need to be as careful with choosing your inventory as people need to be when they are shopping. Your choices influence those of your customers, don’t over complicate things!
